John C. Cockerham, Bank and Insurance Regulator, Bank VP, Former Falmouth Resident died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 74. He was the husband of Cynthia (Figuerido) Cockerham. Mr. Cockerham grew up on his grandparents’ vegetable farm in E. Falmouth, MA, and spent much of his boyhood working the 12-acre farm and selling the family’s crops at a roadside stand. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and swimming at Pine Crest Beach. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1965. During his youth, he worked many jobs to raise money for college and spent several years with the Stop & Shop in Falmouth in a variety of roles including night crew manager and frozen foods manager. He also spent two summers working as a Falmouth Police Officer in Woods Hole. In 1971 he married his wife Cynthia, another Falmouth native, and eventually moved to Raynham.

Mr. Cockerham received an associate of arts degree in business management from Cape Cod Community College, a bachelor’s degree in accounting from U. Mass Dartmouth and a Master’s degree in banking from the University of Wisconsin. He also earned several professional credentials including: Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Life Underwriter, and Certified Financial Services Auditor. He was also a licensed real estate broker.

Mr. Cockerham began his professional career as a national bank examiner with the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, an agency of the U.S. Treasury Dept. During this time he examined many banks throughout New England and was a training crew leader for new examiners. Later he joined the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, where he served as a directing bank examiner and was the examiner-in-charge of the largest banks in New England including Bank of Boston, Fleet Bank, State Street Bank and Citizen’s Bank. He also was a vice president and senior financial officer at Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank. He ended his career as a manager of financial analysis in the financial surveillance unit of the Massachusetts Division of Insurance.

Mr. Cockerham was involved in many civic and community pursuits. He was a board member of the Massachusetts Employees Deferred Compensation Oversight Committee which oversees the deferred savings plan for Massachusetts’ public employees including municipal, police and fire personnel. He was a member of the Raynham Finance Committee for several years and served as vice-chairman. He also served as chairman of the U.S Comptroller’s Boston Equal Employment Opportunity Committee. He was a scout leader, a United Way facilitator, a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a Lector at St. Ann’s Church in Raynham. He also lectured on banking to various groups including the local Rotary Club and was a school reader at Oliver Wendell Homes School in Boston. He was also invited to lecture at Boston College Law School. In his adult years, Mr. Cockerham most enjoyed traveling with his family, especially cruising. He was an accomplished swimmer and an avid and knowledgeable boxing fan. He also enjoyed writing poetry and his poems were published in a number of literary publications.

Surviving family besides his wife are a son, James Cockerham, of Taunton, and a daughter, Julie Cockerham, of Raynham; three sisters, Joan Hill and Caron Krier, both of Florida, and Debra Ladd of Rochester, MA. He is also survived by two brothers, Scott Cardoza of Florida, and Greg Cockerham of North Carolina.

Visitation will take place on Friday, April 29, 2022, from 9:30 – 10AM at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 584 West Falmouth Highway, West Falmouth, MA. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11AM at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Highway, East Falmouth, MA. Burial will be at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
